week 2 assg 1
- On
your Observational Checklist, note the Essential Components
that are addressed during the first part of the shared reading activity.
How does this activity engage students who are at different levels of
literacy development?
Phonological awareness, word
identification/phonics, composition and fluency are addressed in the lesson. By
having an interesting poem all students are engaged. She then calls are
different students at random times to answer questions. She has a systematic
way of teaching phonics which makes it easier for many students to follow.
- During her
explicit phonics lesson, how does Ms. Perez support students’
problem-solving skills?
By building on their background
knowledge of past lessons and by sounding it out with them.
- Based on
what you saw in the video, what are the different ways that shared reading
can be used to promote literacy?
Left to right reading, capitol and
lowercase letters, word patterns
- Why does
she think it’s important for students to verbalize their strategies? What
else do you notice about how she helps students build meaning in text?
So that they can connect to it and internalize
it so that they use it. Looking at pictures, covering words
- How does
Ms. Perez organize her classroom to support a wide range of learners?
By having a student teacher so she can
work with students individually and observing them. She allows students to
choose their preference of book reading and activity
- How are
reading and writing connected in classroom activities?
Making words, connecting pictures to
blends, book reading
- How does
Ms. Perez use ongoing individual assessment to guide her instruction? How
can the class profile be used to help group students and differentiate
instruction?
Does assessment throughout year, beginning,
middle and end. Implements instruction and skills based on results from the
classroom.
- How can
ongoing assessment be integrated into your own classroom practice?
I would also like to assess students at
the beginning, middle and end of the school year so that I can know where
students are up to and their progress.
I think having a student teacher is a big help in this classroom. I know teachers who would love to do more assessments, but they run out of time. Knowing where your students are at is a big deal when it comes to reading.
